Do Veneers Make Your Breath Smell

--

It’s an unfortunately common complaint: dental veneers that look great, but don’t smell so good. This is serious and needs rapid attention. There are a few common reasons for this, but most of them mean you will have to have your veneers redone, or possibly need even more work. Here’s what cosmetic dentistry experts say.

What is causing veneers to smell bad?

Use of strong chemicals on the adhesive: The adhesive is often (but not always) glycerin (made from liquid paraffin) and oil. This combination makes the glue used to attach the veneer to your tooth strong enough to last a lifetime, but not so strong that it smells like fresh toast in a dentist’s office. To smell fresh you need something with a slightly different smell, something not made from petroleum. This is hard to find. We use rosewood, cinnamon, and a blend of frankincense and sandalwood. In general, all our veneers smell good. If you suspect your veneers smell and they do not seem to have an obvious cause, get them redone as soon as you can. Redoing veneers is expensive and stressful and we can’t offer a recommendation.

What can be done if your veneers are stained?

Ask your dentist to check your veneers for the following: Any green, yellow, brown, or black stains. Any unusual growth on the veneers (for example, a bright red or black spot where a filling used to be). Any area of your teeth that seems “off”, either lightly damaged or in need of refinishing, but which hasn’t been painted over yet. Veneers are only durable if they are sealed well and hard to chew on, so these kind of stains are difficult to avoid. If you already have the stains, you need to have them removed and replaced immediately. Cosmetic dentist will be happy to do this right then and there, for a relatively inexpensive fee. In more serious cases, the stains may be the sign of something serious and will require more extensive work, such as root canals.

What can be done if your veneers are not fitting?

You may need to have the veneers remade. Sometimes, veneers are put on incorrectly or do not fit well, and will require adjustments. Sometimes, you may need to have veneers redone, as there is a slight imperfection that shows after your veneers have been on for a while. Sometimes, your veneers are not taking on the shape of your teeth properly. Sometimes, they will simply not be a good match for your teeth. There are many reasons that your veneers may not be working the way they should, and you need to have them redone or replaced.
